Different Approaches to Language Arts Learning

Students underachieve in some subjects. There are many factors to this. An important one is how you as a student approach how you learn language arts. Teachers are using many different approaches on how to attract students so that they can study better and achieve their learning potential. Learning language arts can be difficult especially to those who are not specialising in it and even at times to those who do so. That is why teachers use the strategies.

Here are some tips which are based on the strategies teachers use. Students can use to their advantage. Using them will make learning language arts interesting, enjoyable and – most importantly – effective for students.

Choosing Books

When you are assigned by your language arts teacher to review a book, choose one which is at the level of your independent reading. This means that you should pick the kinds of books which you can appreciate or analyse without frustration or difficulty by yourself without any help. Remember that you need to be effective in reviewing the book so that you can write the good review itself which you will submit.

Knowing Objectives

When the class is starting a new lesson, you should find out why you are studying it. What are its significance and purpose. It is like knowing what you would like to achieve after the end of the lesson. This is one secret to learning. You should know why you are studying a module. In the context of reading in researching for writing, knowing the reason why you have picked the source or material is important.

Connecting Knowledge and Experience to Learning

Before you read the material assigned, read its title and overview and think about what you would like to know about it. Write them down. While reading and after doing so, take note of what prior knowledge and experiences that you have that is about or related to what you are reading or have read. Connecting your prior knowledge and experiences to what you are learning at present is one important element in learning language arts through literature.

Learning by Teaching

To do this, you can form a pair or a group where members will each be assigned a task among predicting, questioning, clarifying, visualising and summarising. Annotating Texts

While reading and studying, you should take note of the main ideas and answers to specific qustions. Mark or highlight them. In doing this, you are figuring out the meaning of the material and have supporting evidence to your answers to the questions given.

Answering Text-Based Evidence Questions

You can practice answering text-based evidence questions. Teachers ask questions where you will need to point out particular lines from the material. You will be asked to give comments about the lines and explain them. View this as a positive challenge.

Immersing into Genre

Teachers give students time to study the features and structures of texts. Whether the time is big or small, you should not waste this opportunity and make the most out of it. This is very helpful when you actually do the writing composition assignment.

Learning from Examples

There are many writing samples you can access before you write your essay. Your teacher will give you many. Learn and practice your writing craft by learning from the authors. In line with this, you can discuss such author styles with other students and collaborate to develop styles that you and your groupmates can use and even call your own.

Analysing

Analysis is important. It is a foundation of learning. When you analyse, you figure out what is behind what you are reading and the reasons behind the writing principles you study and use. When studying materials – whether in research or mere studying , you should analyse the authors’ styles and use of language. The analysis you will do should be literal and figurative so that you can get the meaning of the texts.
