How to Write your Law Essays

Writing law essays is an unavoidable yet unenviable coursework throughout the entire programme of law and, admittedly, many students will readily agree they’ll never master writing an essay of the kind even if it’s their nth time writing it. This helpful guide presents you with tips that are otherwise given in the classroom to help you write excellent essays.
Law Essay Writing Tips
- Start by carefully reading the law essay question. Underline keywords so you’d know what the essay question is asking.
- Read through several textbooks about the particular topic. Find out what other pertinent resources were used in discussing the topic (shown in the footnotes or endnotes) and make a list of these. Especially note down anything you find helpful to support your ideas as you go along with the research. You may also simply store the information in your head, depending on what works for you!
- Write a list of additional materials, just as you did from your original textbook. Opt to read the most timely and recent resources because the body of laws are continually commented upon and thus, keeping you updated with the latest authoritative takes on the matter.
- Start writing your essay. Use a plan. Create an outline. Keep an open mind by writing the ideas as they come out of your head, and not rigidly as if you are hopelessly bound to tackle the essay in a strict, sequential manner. Others may disagree, but these techniques are meant to make your law essay writing task a bit more manageable.
- Proofread your law essay, and employ word economy. Check if you can shorten a paragraph so that the essay will be as concise and substantial as possible.
