One of most deplorable yet commonly committed tendencies of any academic understudies — including law students – is to procrastinate. Procrastination does not only refer to the process of delaying or postponing a certain task or activity but also refers to the act of doing nothing to perform the project or accomplish the job.

Why Students Procrastinate
There are hundreds of reasons why students procrastinate, especially when it comes to academic projects like assignments, essays, book reviews and reports. Every student has his or her own versions of the reasons for procrastinating over academic tasks and activities. Below are some of the most common reasons for doing so.
First, students procrastinate because they are simply too busy to attend to another project. As you already know, a student’s life is full of different tasks and activities of different difficulties, completion period and weights. Most of the time, students would select which among the project would be done first. As for projects belong to the “less priority” column, student tend to procrastinate on them.
Also, students procrastinate because doing so would simply help them avoid the task. For instance, a student tasked by his or her class group to write a brief about a certain topic might want to avoid doing what is assigned to do, perhaps does not like the task itself. To avoid the task, the student would delay it, and would eventually force his or her group mates to rescind the assignment from him.
Students may also procrastinate they are afraid of failure or are perfectionists. Some students don’t want to see themselves fail. They would rather avoid a very complicated academic task than see themselves fail. They may also avoid doing the project to prevent themselves from feeling the fear of failure. If they think that a certain academic task like law essay writing is too much for them to handle, they would procrastinate.
If some students procrastinate because of fear of failure, others procrastinate due to fear of success. They are afraid of success simply because they think that being successful would turn their lives upside down, with people expecting more of them, even beyond what they can really do. They believe that if they work too hard, the pressure on them would just grow. Afraid of success, students procrastinate on their academic tasks.
There is a long list of reasons on why students procrastinate. While some delays or avoidance might not be bad, most of time it leads to harmful results. The task itself, if completed, could be of low quality, given that students would usually rush things up and would not mind messing up just to be able to meet the deadline. Worse, students may not be able to submit their law essays and other projects. In the end, students would get bad grades and bad impressions and might carry their procrastinating attitude to the real world after graduating from their studies.
How to Prevent or Stop Procrastination
It is surely difficult to prevent or stop procrastinating when you don’t know in the first place why, when and how you procrastinate. Your reasons for procrastinating might be one of those listed above, and that would represent the first phase in your quest to stop this annoying attitude.
Truthfully, it is rather hard to tell when you are already trying to procrastinate. You may know it yourself, but you may already be procrastinating. Instead to trying to detect when you are already procrastinating, it might be better to write a list of instances in which you might tend to procrastinate. Take note of your potential reactions to each of those instances. For instance, when you are procrastinating, you might be sweating a lot or seems be very annoyed of the task, even though there is nothing to be annoyed of.
Once you have already listed your reasons procrastinating for as well as have identified the instance when you are doing so, it is now dire time to work on this attitude. You can do so by yourself, but it is always better to involve others, especially those who can serve as your anti-procrastination coach. It is better to tell them about your problem and they might help a lot in order to push a new attitude that does not entail procrastination.
